Level 1: Scratch Basics

Welcome to Scratch Masters! In this first lesson, we'll introduce you to Scratch, a fun, visual programming tool perfect for creating games, stories, and animations. Let's dive in!

What is Scratch?

Scratch is a visual programming platform developed by MIT. It uses "blocks" of code that you drag and connect together to create animations and games. These blocks make programming easy and fun!

Scratch Interface Tour:

  • Stage: This is the area where your animations and games come to life.

  • Sprites: Characters or objects that you control with code.

  • Blocks Palette: Contains blocks you use to give instructions to your sprites.

  • Coding Area: Where you connect blocks together to build your program.

Creating Your First Sprite:

  1. Click the "Choose a Sprite" button and select "Paint."

  2. Use the drawing tools to create your character. Experiment with shapes, colors, and tools!

  3. Name your sprite clearly (e.g., "Hero" or "MySprite").

Animating Your Sprite:

  1. Drag the "When green flag clicked" block into the coding area.

  2. Add blocks like "move 10 steps" and "turn 15 degrees" to make your sprite move.

  3. Use the "next costume" block to animate your sprite if it has multiple costumes.

  4. Click the green flag above the stage to test your animation.

Your Challenge:

Create your own animated sprite! Experiment with different movements like spins, jumps, or simple dances. Have fun exploring and getting comfortable with Scratch!

Great job! Keep exploring, and we'll see you in Lesson 2!
